Film Screening: “Norma Rae” on 9.29

September 18, 2013

At Family Forward Oregon we believe that our economy and all the people who make it go do best when workplaces work for employees and employers alike.

And while that balance is very much happening in some workplaces, it’s not happening in too many others where employees are under or unequally paid, overworked, refused benefits, denied full-time positions, unable to schedule ahead, discriminated against for being pregnant or being a family caregiver (among other things).

And our whole community suffers as a result.

Which is why we chose “Norma Rae” — a classic film (1979!) about workplace conditions, the power of collective bargaining, and the process of union organizing — as the 3rd film in our 2013 Film Series.

“Norma Rae” will get you thinking about the importance of collective bargaining in our country – a timely topic as the basic needs of American workers are increasingly marginalized by powerful corporate interests and the politicians they fund who are working overtime to cripple the power of collective bargaining.

The film also shows the many ups and downs of activism – how it works and how long it can take to win.  If you’ve ever been a grassroots activist, Norma Rae’s experience will resonate!

The screening is FREE, but reserving a seat is recommended since space is limited.  The film will be followed by a group discussion about why we still need collective bargaining, how workplace organizing works, and more about what the labor movement is doing to advance all workers’ rights.

Here are the details:
