Ms. Lyles was the keynote speaker at the City Club of Portland’s Friday Forum this Friday, May 1st. The conversation, which we helped to arrange, is about the “State of Motherhood.” Because, frankly, in our country, it’s not so good — especially when it comes to the way our economy intersects with family caregiving.

Our Executive Director, Andrea Paluso, participated in a panel discussion along with Dr. Aileen Duldulao, a Maternal and Child Health Epidemiologist with Multnomah County and a primary author of the 2014 Multnomah County Health Department Maternal, Child and Family Health Data Book.

This agenda is about the future of America’s families and the growth of America’s economy,” said Leader Pelosi. “When women earn equal pay, we know America’s economy will prosper. When women can have fairness and balance between work and family, we know American society will thrive. It is about unleashing the power of our nation’s women and, in doing so, strengthening the middle class – the backbone of our democracy. And when all women succeed, we know America succeeds.

The forum will include personal stories from Oregon women who are struggling without policies like flexible work schedules, paid time off, affordable child care, and equal pay.

Family Forward Oregon’s Executive Director Andrea Paluso is very honored to bring Leader Pelosi’s strong national voice on women’s economic issues to Oregon, where her organization is seeking solutions to the same issues:

 It’s past time to address the significant issues Oregon women and families are struggling with every day as they work hard to provide for their families – young and old – while also meeting their significant caregiving needs. Barriers like unequal pay, lack of paid time off at work, and unaffordable childcare are all too real, but encouragingly solvable with some of the smart policies Leader Pelosi is developing.

On Saturday, September 27, 2014, Family Forward Oregon will host House Leader Nancy Pelosi, Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01), Oregon Senate Majority Leader Diane Rosenbaum (District 21), and state Representatives Jessica Vega Pederson (District 47) and Jennifer Williamson (District 36) at a women’s economic forum to discuss the importance of workplace policies that make it possible for women to meet the competing demands of work and family caregiving without sacrificing her or her family’s economic security.
